The Quincy University Hawk baseball team swept its 2004 home-opening weekend with two wins over Upper Iowa University on Saturday afternoon and two more wins over The Franciscan University on Sunday at QU Stadium. The Hawks defeated the Peacocks of Upper Iowa 6-1 and 6-4 on Saturday, followed by 11-2 and 14-3 decisions over the Saints of The Franciscan University on Sunday. The Hawks (5-3) were led on offense by senior second baseman Kevin Sewell, Round Lake, Northern Illinois Univ., who was 9-14 on the weekend with 11 RBIs, six doubles, and three home runs. Sewell also scored five runs over four games for the Hawks. On the mound, senior righthander Matt Rodeffer, Stronghurst, Southern, started QU's winning ways with a complete game victory over Upper Iowa in game one on Saturday, allowing four hits and one earned run over seven innings pitched, with eight strikeouts and two walks. Freshman hurler Brad Stone, St. Louis, Mo., CBC, followed suit in game two with his first complete game victory of the season, allowing five hits and four earned runs over seven innings, while fanning 10 batters and walking a pair. Junior transfer Brandon Waeltz, Marissa, SWIC, picked up his first win of the season on Sunday afternoon vs. TFU, allowing seven hits and one earned run over six innings of work. Sophomore righthander Chris Otten, St. Libory, Freeburg, also picked up the second win of his collegiate career on Sunday, allowing six hits and two earned runs over five innings pitched, walking none and fanning nine Saint batters. Quincy returns to non-conference action when the Hawks head to Pensacola, Florida for six games at the University of West Florida from Mar. 5th through the 8th. The Hawks return home on Wednesday, Mar. 17th to open their home conference schedule with the Rivermen of the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at QU Stadium. |
