The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
La Harpe- Motorist and shoppers were a little inconvenienced this past week while road repairs were being made on Main Street. However, the project went relatively fast.
The contractor, Sipes Construction from Rushville, was working on Main Street/Highway 9 from Casey's at the west end of the city to the Dollar General store on the east end of La Harpe.
The work was done in stages. First, a machine was used to cut through the pavement in the area to be replaced. Next, the old cement was dug out and loaded onto trucks and hauled away. Then the area was swept and measured, and the hole was filled with cement and leveled off.
This new cement was covered with a tarp to keep it from drying too fast and cracking. The area was allowed to set for five hours before tarps were removed and traffic allowed to drive on it.
Susan Larson from Local #231 was one of four flaggers working on the project. She is from Tennessee, IL. The flaggers must be there when work begins in the morning, and they work for five hours. After the last hole is filled with cement, they leave, which can make for a very long day!
