The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
Carman Township borders on the Mississippi River with sloughs and attracted a population that was composed of drifters and semi-nomadic characters in early times.
In 1842, William Marsden arrived from England and the next year was joined by his son Henry. The next year the Cisna family, Zelile, William, Lewis and Enoch, with their father John, took up residence.
The village of Carman was surveyed and platted at the insistance of Joseph Carman in 1870.
During that same year Zelile and Enoch Cisna moved their business from Shokokon to the village. This was the first business house in its borders, which was replaced in 1873 by a general merchandise store run by Zelile Cisna and Abraham Babcook. In 1875 Mr. Cisna retired and Elisha Babcook joined the management.
