La Harpe School Board Approves Personnel Changes

Several Personnel Decisions were made at the regular meeting of the La Harpe School Board Monday June 14th.

Meeting in the School District Library board members Ricky Johnson, Barbara Cox, Mark Irish, Dan Horton, and Ed Pence aprroved the following for employment:

Requests for reimburse for college courses or advancement on the salary schedule were approved for Andrea Ferguson, Carrie Finch, Nancy Barnett, Charlotte Davis, Laurena Hunter, and Lila McKeown.

In other business, the board:

Elementary/Junior High Principal Charlotte Davis reported that Brandon Gooding is running open gym for any boy interested in playing basketball during June and July on Thursday and Sunday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m except on July 4th.

Registration has been set for August 16th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Teacher Institute will be August 19th and 20th and students will attend for 1/2 day on August 23rd.

End of the year activities included plays performed by the second graders. Mrs. Boyer's fourth grade also performed a play.

Fifth graders put on a wax museum tied to their social studies lessons.

The Kindergarten track meet was held on the last day of school.

Nine 8th grade students received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award at 8th grade promotion ceremonies. Brenda Sparrow, Arlynn Hitz, Cathy Jones, and Sarah Kerfoot are teaching summer school for special education students.

The student council held a picnic on May 26th to welcome 5th graders to junior high.

They also did community service in town during the last week of school.

High School Principal Charles Apt reported that a co-op awards program was held on Monday, June 7th at West Prairie.

Track, softball and baseball participants were recognized.

Claire McKee and Cody Wisslead participated in the state track meet this year.

The softball team finished the season in the regional championship game.

The baseball team won their regional and advanced to the sectional championship game.

This is the furthest that either team has ever progressed.

He also reported that the floor plan has been chosen for next year's building trades house.

It will be similar in style to what has been built the last two years but a little smaller.

The first 2004-05 Section XI FFA Officer meeting was held on May 13th in the La Harpe Ag room with several of last years section officers.

The Section FFA Ag Olympics will be held again this year along with changes in the Blue and Gold Award, and new section officer tee shirts will be ordered.

The next meeting will be held at Breanne Oliver's in Blandinsville on June 22nd starting at 6:00 p.m.

Around 35 FFA members attended the Spring cookout in the Ag shop on May 19th and the new Chapter Officers were installed.

Those officers met on June 1st to plan our summer activities which include going to Ft. Madison, IA, on July 1st for miniature golf and go-karts and on August 3rd, having a softball game, swimming at the LH pool, followed by a pizza party.

The annual FFA Labor Auction will be at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 14th, during Summerfest.

On June 8-10, eleven members from La Harpe attended the Illinois State FFA Convention at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center in Springfield.

Joni Dowell and Kevin Penrod served as chapter delegates. Anna Ziegler was installed as the new Section XI FFA President and Joni Dowell received her State FFA Degree. Anna and Lacey Pence worked in the Press Core taking pictures of State Award winners.

Genessa Cox, Claire McKee, Kirsten Johnson, Megan Poulter, Kelli Burr, Mitch Worley, and Kevin Mershon worked as ushers in the courtesy Core for the afternoon sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Mr. Mealiff will be attending the IAVAT Inservice and Teachers Conference in Springfield. the Section XI Vo-Ag Fair will be on July 19th and 20th at the 4-H Center west of Macomb.

Mr. Mealiff will be judging General Projects at the Hancock County 4-H Fair on July 12th at Carthage.
