The American Legion Post #301 is in the process of getting a facelift. Several of its members (over 100 strong) volunteered this past weekend and tore off old worn out siding in hopes of brightening up their meeting hall where they have gathered for so many years.
The Legion building is located just a block south of La Harpe's Main Street.
Last year some windows were taken out and either covered up or replaced. This year the men are replacing the old siding.
Money from memorials along with fund-raisers has been the source of income for building improvements. The largest memorial and most recent was from the family of Cliff Gittings
All gifts are much appreciated by the Legion members. John Lee, of Macomb is Commander and conducts the regular monthly meetings.
The Legion first organized November 5, 1919 with thirty charter members electing B.A. Hedges as Commander. The Post operated until 1923, according to the La Harpe history book, then disbanded for financial reasons.
On March 24, 1930, Post 301 was rechartered with fifteen members, 5 of which were on the charter of 1919. A new Charter member, Henry Andrews, was Commander.
Meetings were held in the Gittings Seminary Building until 1952 when a building purchased from the Camp Ellis Military Reserve near Table Grove was moved to La Harpe and remains as their meeting Post.
The American Legion sponsors the Good Citizenship Awards for La Harpe's Junior High and High School graduating classes yearly, take part in flag ceremonies, memorial ceremonies and give honorary veteran salutes at cemeteries.
One member reported that the La Harpe Legion have been asked to do several Military Rites at cemetery services in Burlington, Iowa as well as at home. This takes 13 to 14 members and more if pallbearers are needed. They play taps as well as the 21 gun salute.
During winter months, the members have monthly fish or chicken frys with all the trimmings for the community.
The Legion also rents out the building for those in the community who need a place for a social or get-together.
The improvements are not only appreciated by Legion members, but also by the Community of La Harpe it serves.
