Moment in History

Around 1828 Jeremiah Smith arrived at Yellow Banks and walked to Lewiston where he informed the Phelps family that Galland, who had settled in Oquawka wished to sell his claim. The father, Stephen, sent Smith back with an order to buy the claim for his son and paid $400 in cash for it.

As soon as Sumner had recovered his health, he and his bride and brother William journeyed to Oquawka and set up their household goods in a rough log house previously occupied by Dr. Galland; it was September 1828.

Poor Phoebe made do with what was available: her table was a box that had contained their personal goods and their bed was formed by rough poles fixed in the side of the house-commonly known as"the stake and rider bedstead."
