Gathered in the La Harpe School's library, board members made several employment decisions at the July 12th meeting.
Laurena Hunter as Athletic Director, Cindy Pollock as head high school volleyball coach, and Denise Brown as assistant high school volleyball coach were hired.
Elaine Long from Carl Sandburg College. Ms. Long gave the board the latest edition of the Envoy publication and gave them a report on new programs and information concerning the college.
In other business, the board
¥approved the second reading of the high school and elementary/junior high school handbooks,
¥reviewed the tentative 2004-05 budget and set the date and time of the Budget Hearing as Monday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m.,
¥appointed Superintendent Campbell as the authorized IMRF agent for the district,
¥approved building use requests by Larry Cortelyou for use of the cafeteria and music building on July 10th and by the Eagle Athletic Booster's Club for use of the gymnasium and concession stand on August 7th for a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, and
¥discussed teacher negotiations.
Elementary/Junior High Principal Charlotte Davis reported
¥that a fundraiser which will help with field trips and student activities during the school year is scheduled for August 15th-August 22nd. The brochure will be passed out at registration. Purchase of any materials (magazines or jewelry) is voluntary.
¥The Eagle Booster's Club is making plans to get volunteers to help with grades 5-8 athletic events.
¥During the summer, teachers have been meeting to discuss various books they have read and to develop implementation plans for use in their classrooms. They are also meeting to work on curriculum and make plans for the upcoming school year.
¥Junior High teachers are continuing to meet for the second year of the Technology Learning Co-hort. Mrs. Hitz, Mrs. Myers, and Mrs. Cindy Jones are forming the year one Learning Co-hort team for the next year. Mr. Schmitz, Mrs. Blythe, Mrs. Bruns, and Mrs. Davis continue meetings for the Learning Co-hort Technology Directors.
¥Mrs. Gebhardt, Mrs. Kerfoot, Mrs. Kendall, Mrs. Bruns, and Mr. McKinnon are continuing training with the Science Math Technology grant.
¥Special education teachers and regular education teachers will meet on August 16th with Lori Thompson from the WCISEC to receive training in autistic strategies.
¥Special education teachers will meet on August 17th with Dr. Kelly and Mrs. Bartlett to discuss new regulations from the reauthorization of the federal law and determine procedures to use at La Harpe concerning referrals for special education services.
¥Through her summer coursework at WIU, Mrs. Davis has secured professors to voluntarily provide professional development on site for each of our school improvement days. (go to page 10)
¥Ricky Johnson read the Ag Report prepared by Paul Mealiff. Mr. Mealiff has been attending In-service training sessions, a small engine workshop, and taking a 5-day intensive BSAA class at WIU.
¥The annual IAVAT Inservice and Ag Teachers Conference was held at Springfield on June 15th-17th. Topics included in the WIU class were mentoring student teachers, meat cuts and carcass evaluation, genetics and biotechnology, and Aboriculture and caring for trees.
He received training on Stihl engines and equipment at Illinois Central Community College at a one-day Small Engine Workshop.
¥Sixteen FFA members attended our fun night on July 1st, at Ft. Madison, IA. They played miniature golf, used the batting cage, rode the go-carts, and finished up with ice cream or a soft drink.
The corn and soybean plots are looking excellent with the cooler temperatures and timely rains.
He has been making Vo-Ag Fair entries and observing our students showing at the Henderson County Fair. Alex Bundy won Grand Champion Female with his shorthorn heifer. Justin and Morgan Mohr exhibited swine and beef animals.
School board members in attendance were: Lawrence Johnson, Dan Horton, Cindy Wear, Barbara Cox, Ricky Johnson, Mark Irish, and Ed Pence.
