Union Makes Employment Decisions
The Union Board of Education met January 21, 2004, in the Library, Biggsville with members Allaman, Bigger, Kage, Miller, Parsons, Sams and Weber present.
After a closed Session for discussion of personnel, resignation, employment, negotiations, and administrator contracts, the board:
- accepted the resignation of Lisa Lox as junior high play sponsor. It was moved by Weber, seconded by Parsons, and carried by unanimous roll call vote, that the Board employ Jill Ralph for the remainder of the 2003/2004 school year as a pre-school one-on-one associate.
- employed Kathy Sells as a part time custodian.
- employed Barry Cisna as an elementary assistant track coach and Mike Snowden as assistant high school track coach.
- extended contracts through June 30, 2005 for Union High School Principal Karen Rima, Union Elementary Principal Tony Ryan, Supt. Dean Irlbeck, and Union High School Counselor Lanie Hultgren.
In other business
Principal Tony Ryan reported:
- Grade levels are using their planning times to filter through the ITBS scores.
- Second quarter report cards mailed.
- Elementary will be hosting basketball regionals and sectionals.
- Volleyball is underway.
- State Department of Health updated the community with findings of the Shigella germ.
- Deb Martin and Jodie Atteberry have worked with Mr. Irlbeck and Mr. Ryan to address a plan of action for the School Improvement Team to address test score concerns.
- Commend Deb Martin for her hard work during her administrative internship and Jodie Atteberry for beginning her administrative internship.
- Will publish Principal Golden Apple students in the paper on a monthly basis.
- 93.82% daily attendance since beginning of semester.
Union Elementary Student Council will host a Bus Driver Appreciation Day Feb. 5, serving bus drivers breakfast.
Principal Karen Rima reported:
- numbers of students on Faculty List & Honor Roll.
- high school has been busy with activities.
- Project After Hours
- Mr. Anderson has switched positions with Mr. Wilson and is now teaching high school P.E. and Health.
- Mr. Snowden and Mrs. Meyer are now team teaching a pre-algebra class.
- Union will be hosting LTC Speech Contest.
- Spring Sports sign-up have been scheduled.
- Committee of Ten made presentation to student body.
- Southern Principal Dale Buss and Coach Dillard met with the 8 -11th grade boys to discuss the coop football program.
Commendations and Congratulations to the following:
- Sherrill Leath for attending and completing a workshop. She was awarded a $400 stipend to use in her classroom.
- Ty Kage earned Eagle Scout.
- Samatha Wright assigned to a special needs student on the bus. She alerted the bus driver that the student was having a seizure.
- Jessica Kelly, Elizabeth Ackermann, and Shannon VanTine for being selected to participate in an honor band at Augustana College.
- Chris Lozier, school nurse. Mrs. Lozier brought it to the attention of a student parents to pursue further medical testing of the student.
- Linda Michael and Carolyn Anderson for receiving a grant. They are rewriting the Tech Plan.
- Approved early graduation for Ty Kage, as long as he meets all graduation requirements by January, 2005. Kage abstained.
- Approved Union High School gradation date for May 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m.
- Test data from the 2003 ISAT, Prairie State, ACT, ITBS, and ITED's reported to the board.
- Reviewed the commitment to the Village of Biggsville regarding restrooms at the Biggsville ballpark. In an earlier motion the district agreed to commit $2,000 to the project.
Supt. Dean E. Irlbeck reported on legislation.
- Committee of 10 report.
- maintenance/repair projects.
- approved transfer $100,000 from Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund and transfer $50,000 from the Working Cash Fund to the Operations and Maintenance Fund as a temporary loan with repayment of the loan to be made when sufficient funds are available.
- adjourned at 10:25 p.m. until February 4, 2004.
