Harold Knight and his wife, Marnelle, have lived in La Harpe for thirty years. Harold says "these 30 years have been the best years of my life." He said he has met many nice people in La Harpe. Harold was born in Salem, Iowa, in 1910, which makes him 93 last August. His school years were spent in Rock Island. He started work before he was 16 at Farmall in Rock Island. At that time, you had to get a permit to work when you were that young. Harold and Marnelle were married in 1965. He then worked as a Conservation Investigator (Game Warden) for 26 years, 20 of those years in Chicago. He had many interesting experiences in Chicago as well as doing a local TV special explaining the deer laws. In 1974, the Knights retired and moved to La Harpe. However, he did work part time as a janitor at the Post Office, City Hall and Methodist Church for 10 years. After that, he had several elderly ladies he did odd jobs for or take to appointments. Harold is a 54-year Mason in the 32nd Degree. But now, he says he really is retired except for mowing his yard with a riding mower. |
