Meet Neighbor, Myrtle Fife, lifetime La Harpe area resident, born in August of 1916 to Earl and Elva (Allen) Shutwell on a farm 3 miles southwest of La Harpe. She and her three sisters attended elementary school at Bradshaw school where their father attended when he was a boy. The girls all attended La Harpe High School. In 1936 Myrtle married David Fife. They have four girls: Marilyn, in Cameron, Margaret, in Cantril, Norma Jean in Quincy and Carolyn, who died in 1968. Myrtle has 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She took granddaughter, Krista Hasten into her home to raise when Carolyn died. Krista lives in La Harpe and is married to David Little. Myrtle is no stranger to hard work. To keep her farm after she was left alone with a family to raise, she raised feeder pigs, painted barns, houses and did housework for different people in addition to doing the farm work. She lived on that same farm for 54 years before moving. She is a member of the Union Church, the Historical Society, the Senior Citizens, is an accomplished quilter and enjoys playing cards at the Senior Center.
