James A.Caswell was born in Saratoga County, New York in 1824. He received a common school education and worked with his father who was a merchant.
He married Miss Arminda Decker and they were the parents of five children. In 1854 the couple arrived in Oquawka where Mr. Caswell bought out the store of Dr. Park & Co. running it under the name of Caswell and Pearce, a drug business.
In 1858 they joined Mr. R. Hodson and added a full line of groceries, but in 1868 withdrew from this firm.
He was a drug dealer in Burlington, Iowa for two years and then returned to the drug and grocery business between Third and Fourth Streets on Schuyler Street. 1882 History of Henderson County
