Since 1854 James A. Caswell had been in business in Oquawka. Buying Dr. Parks store, he established a drugstore business under the name of Caswell & Pearce.
In 1858 they allied themselves with Robert Hodson and put in a line of groceries. In 1868 Mr. Caswell went out on his own with a drugstore between 3rd & 4th Streets on Schuyler.
Mr. Caswell was born in 1824 in Saratoga County, New York. He grew up working in his father mercantile business. In 1850 he married Miss Arminda Decker and they were the parents of five children.
