Urges Support Of Superintendent

Dear Editor,

There will be one of many decisions made soon by our new school board, School District #235 concerning who will be the superintendent.

I am supporting Dean Irlbeck as the man for the job. Being a volunteer at Union for many years, I see first hand his ability to lead and be fair. His ability for finances is unsurpassed.

His support for the consolidation was unfailing even knowing his job was on the line. This is the kind of person I want for superintendent; the one who puts the children of our school district ahead of himself.

The Best Present?

Dear Editor,

As is said, there are two types of people in the world, the givers and the takers. The takers may eat better, but the givers sleep better, because they are happier.

Speaking of eating, it is hard to believe that 75% of people in the world do not have enough to eat. 11% in the United States are living below the poverty level and are hungry.

Remember when most of our mothers made us clean up our plates before we left the table? Once established, it is hard to break that good habit and it might be good to wisely instigate it with more of our young people today (and at the same time prevent obesity).

Another good present that needs to be given to our young people is learning how to put in a hard day's work and being punctual and responsible while doing it.

In my opinion, if teenagers want a car or something else, they should save and earn the money for it. If they can't find a minimum wage job, there are paper routes, lawn work, walks to shovel, etc.

Most people will hire those that show they really want to work. If they start at the bottom they will appreciate the better jobs later in their lives.

It is the same with cars. If they start out with an inexpensive student car, they will appreciate the better cars (or homes or whatever) later as they go up the economic ladder.

Another important present we can give our children (besides time, roots and wings), rather than all of the newest technological gadgets, is a piece of our nation.

Some parents buy their child life insurance at birth.

In my opinion, the best present they could give them would be a well diversified mutual fund of blue ship stocks in a trust.

When they reached college age, they would be amazed at what it would be worth. This would be an incentive to continue investing throughout life. Instead of wasting everything on booze, cigarettes, drugs or gambling, they would have something to build on, hopefully throughout life.

Generally, November, December, and January have been the best months to get the best investment results.

Of course, the best presents we can give our fellow man is the gift of life. This involves no money, and with our doctor's authorization, merely involves donating a pint of blood every eight weeks.

Remember many people not only need blood, but food, shelter, medicine and companionship (not only in the United States, but even more so throughout the world.)

At this Christmas season, it is important to remember that God has given us the most important gift. The best present we can give to Him is acceptance and love for Him and other human beings.
