Recess is over for the summer, well, at least for most of the area children who were back in school this week. The LaHarpe School District #335 is officially back in session.
School began for the teachers with two full days of Teacher's Institute days. On August 19th teachers met in Macomb, and August 20th at La Harpe. Then teachers were ready to greet the students.
Most students began with a half day of school on Monday August 23rd and their first full day of classes on Tuesday, September 24th.
A Preschool Open House for parents and students was held on Tuesday with the first day of preschool today (Wednesday).
This school year the district welcomes Jena Painter as a new fourth grade teacher.
New assignments of personnel are as follows:
Lila McKeown, High School Principal along with teaching 3 high school science classes; Laurena Hunter, Athletic Director and P.E. teacher; Liz Abbott, 4-8 Special Education; Sara Kerfoot, 3-6 Special Education; Jason Finch, Junior High Special Education; Charles Apt, part-time Building Trades teacher; Cindy Bruns, 6th grade Language Arts, Math and Study Skills; Melisa Sturlic, 7th grade Language Arts and High School Freshman English; Nancy Barnett, 7th grade Study Skills and Health, 8-12 Home Economics; Stephanie Mencel, Elementary General Music, and 7-12 Vocal and Instrumental Music; and Samantha McGaughey, 7-8 and high school Math.
Enrollment for the High School is down this school year. Freshman 32, Sophomores 22, Juniors 36, Seniors 25 for a total of 115 students.
Enrollment for Pre-K through 8th grade are as follows:
Pre-school 24, Kindergarten 23, 1st grade 34, 2nd grade 32, 3rd grade 27, 4th grade 35, 5th grade 33, 6th grade 38, 7th grade 42, and 8th grade 38. Total 326 students
Meet the Cyclones was held on Monday night, August 25th at Bauman Field, West Prairie High School at Sciota. All football players, cheerleaders, pep band members and coaches were introduced. The first Varsity football game is August 27th at Pittsfield at 7 P.M..
The first football game for the Freshman will be at the Camp Point Jamboree on Saturday 28th. The Junior Varsity first football game is Monday 30th at Sciota at 6 P.M..
