The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment in History

John Wesley Hopper, son of Lambert Hopper, ran the store at Warren (known today as Hopper) in the 1850's and until his death in 1871.

Two store registers survive and provide a listing of inhabitants in the town and surrounding area.

These books are housed in the Local and Family History room at the Henderson County Library in Biggsville and each account gives a view of what a family needed in their daily lives.

For example, Mr. Roland Ward's account in 1857 shows that he bought books, hat, coffee, sugar, calico, a washboard, candle wicks, tallow, and a belt all adding up to $12.65 (Today, that $12.65 would be worth approximately $224.24.

Money was scarce and one only purchased what he could not raise or make at home.)

Go to the library and see what your relative bought.
