Letters to Editor

Dear Editor,

Thoughts on the Democratic Convention

The Democratic Party had their week in the limelight and Mr. Obama gave the best address. As expected, in the Clinton tradition, every American was promised something. So how do they pay for all of these programs?

Of course, take from the rich and give to the poor.

The upper five percent of income people now pay fifty-three percent of the income taxes (after tax cuts).

How much more do you penalize people for being successful? There is no excuse for anyone to go hungry in the U.S.

However, people need to learn to help themselves (rather than a handout) in order to enhance their self images. A prime example of this is when Tommy Thompson basically did away with the welfare system in Wisconsin and instead instigated work incentives.

Although John Edwards turns on the Clinton like charisma in talking about being born poor and seeking to help the poor, it is somewhat hypocritical when some would say that he has taken some of the court system and insurance companies for approximately 60 million of net worth.

Another thing hard to take is when Bill and Hillary Clinton are all lovey dovey when he has spent his life cheating on her.

When personal power is the most important thing in peoples' lives, you have their type of relationship.

Then you have the star of the show, John Kerry. You would have thought that he was the greatest war hero since Audie Murphy (most true war hero's don't toot their own horn)!

He no doubt did some effective work in the Vietnam War, but what is he going to do about terrorism?

When he came home to be a war protester, it was not helpful to those still there. What does this say about his loyalty? Say what you might about President Bush, but he is very loyal to his vice president and the rest of his cabinet because as some of us believe, they are an effective unit, but they need four more years to complete their job (especially on terrorism).

In conjunction with the Iraq situation, the Democrats always talk about not finding any weapons of mass destruction.

The real destructive WMD have been the terrorists who have nothing to live for, with no freedoms or decent standards of living and thus, they become suicide bombers.

When other such people, throughout the world, see Iraqi people who do have freedoms and a decent life will they not also seek to have a similar situation?

In my opinion, the groundwork has been laid for at least four prosperous years.

Because of the recession and war, many people have suffered in the last four years.

However, it is very evident that our economy continues to gradually improve, and the threat of terrorism in the world has considerably diminished.

Dear Editor,

Encouragement

To Select Leaders

Recently, I read that many more young people are considering voting in the upcoming election. To do so would be commendable. The parties and their agendas are a challenge for all ages.

President Thomas Jefferson said that the first and main purpose of any democracy is the protection of its citizens.

It's been said that a politician thinks of the next election as a statesman thinks of the next generation.

"Blessed is the nation whose

God is the Lord"

-Psalms 34: 12a

Contrary to some current words, America was founded by many Godly statesmen.

Statistics reveal that many Christians neither register or vote.

Policies in Washington, D.C. affect all of us.

Precious freedom will continue to erode, unless citizens seriously make their vote a responsibility.

It is not enough to listen to words and remain confused.

Study facts to ascertain the truth, then ask yourself- do I want a politician in office or a statesman?

Dear Editor,

Rebuttal

Recently, an article was published about the rudeness of a person that helped move a family to Stronghurst-that was myself. The article continued to embarrass myself and my family by saying we were not raised in a Christian home. That has hurt us badly and as a final thing I can do for my deceased parents, I want to say, we were a Christian family.

My father passed away in 1951, the year the writer was born, my mother was killed in an auto accident in 1974, on a Sunday after she had taught Sunday School in Salem, Iowa. The Bible and the papers that the little children had written get-well notes on to another teacher were at my mother's side.

I have known the writer of the published article for 6 years, hardly long enough to be judging the home in which I was raised.

We loved you Mom and Dad , may you rest in peace.
