Union Board Hires Jill Colley

Union School Board members, after almost four hours of closed session (5:32 to 9:20 p.m.) returned from conducting elementary principal interviews.

The board voted to employ Jill Colley of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa as Union Elementary Principal for the 2004/2005 school year in a one year contract. She is a 1982 Union High School graduate.

Karen Rima, Union High School Principal, reported on several matters relating to Union High School, including the following:

  1. 2nd session of summer school will end Friday.
  2. Football camp started.
  3. Girls' basketball team in a weekend tournament in Cedar Rapids, IA.
  4. Currently working on daily class period schedules.
  5. Union and Southern teachers will meet in August to go over curriculum.
  6. Two individuals deserve to be recognized for their efforts in helping keep things moving in a coherent manner throughout the school year and during the summer: Alta Mae Brokaw and Barb Gray.

The board employed Vicki Darwin as Union High School Spanish teacher for the 2004/2005 school year.

The board extended congratulations to Randi Short for her basketball accomplishments this summer and to Todd Hamilton, a 1983 graduate of Union High School for winning the British Open.

The board approved the following by consent:

  1. Minutes from the meeting held on June 23, 2004
  2. Revised board calendar
  3. June financial reports
  4. Food and milk bids

The board received a report on transportation safety plans.

The administration recommended to the board that there should not be any increases to the registration fees and lunch fees for 2004/2005.

The board accepted the bids as recommended by Independent Risk Managers for property, liability, and casualty insurance. The board received information on the budget calendar.

Kick-off, Union Elementary Curriculum Night, and 5th grade Orientation will be the same night this year.

Dean E. Irlbeck, Superintendent, reported:

  1. Work is progressing on most projects
  2. Legislation

Doug Sams reported to the board on the recent consolidation meeting.

The board entered into Closed Session at 10:13 p.m. for discussion of resignations, employment, and compensation for non-certified employees, returned at 10:51 p.m.

They accepted resignations of Cathy Zigler, and Tara Abel, and employed Amanda Torrance to fill the 3-5 associate position for the 2004/2005 school year.

The board approved the recommendations of the Superintendent for the 2004/2005 compensation for the associates, secretarial, and other support staff.

The Board met at 5:30 p.m. on July 19 with Allaman, Bigger, Kage, Miller, Parsons, and Sams present.

Weber was absent.

The board adjourned at 11:15 p.m until the next meeting, August 17th at 6:00 p.m.
