Moment in History

In 1828 S.S.Phelps married Miss Phebe Chase of Fulton County.

Leaving his young wife at their home, he went to join his brother, Alexis, who had gone to Galena and engaged extensively in lead mining, he arrived there in March 1828.

Alexis, ever the entrepreneur, sent his brother onward to Dodgeville on the Wisconsin River to put up a furnace to be used for smelting.

After building a log house, S.S. started for Fulton County to retrieve his wife.

On the way there through wild unsettled country, he took sick from mineral poisoning and was obliged to abandon mining.
