Moment in History

The Phelps family originated in Connecticut, but like most pioneers moved onward as land opened up.

In New York their family was born and as the boys grew into manhood, they ventured West to first Kentucky and then Illinois.

In 1820 Alexis and Stephen selected a residence for the family near the present site of Springfield, built a log house and plowed 80 acres.

In the fall of 1821 the rest of the family joined them.

Here they lived for four years before moving onward to Lewiston, Fulton County. S.S. engaged in the Indian trade for his father and traded through all the country north and east of Peoria.
