Born in Maine and coming to Oquawka in 1847, Mr. Jonathan Simpson and his brother Jason entered the mercantile business, but after four years the firm was dissolved.

Having studied law previously, Jonathan entered the law office of C. M. Harris, a local attorney and later legislator.

Here Jonathan studied diligently and was admitted to the bar in 1853.

He served as school commissioner, constitutional convention representative, member of the General Assembly as well as serving in county offices.

Mr. Simpson left his mark on Henderson County.
