County Republicans Host Successful Fish Fry

Over 500 people enjoyed the patriotic music, beautiful weather, and fried chicken and catfish last Sunday at the annual Henderson County Republican Fish Fry, held at Delabar State Park north of Oquawka.

Among those who spoke during the program included State Representative Rich Myers and State Senator Dan Rutherford of Pontiac, who is considering a future run for statewide office.

Rutherford made mention during his turn on the podium that he was a fraternity brother at ISU with Republican County Chairman Chuck Neff.

Another speaker was Jonathon Wright of Lincoln, who announced last week that he is a candidate for U.S. Senate. Wright, a former Illinois state representative, is a Galesburg native and graduate of Monmouth College.

There were two prospective candidates for Congress also in attendance. Dan Johnston of Roseville and Pete Calderone of Galesburg both indicated to the crowd that they were considering a run in 2004 for the 17th District congressional seat and would announce their intentions later in the year.

Other GOP officials introduced included Circuit Clerk Sandra Keane, Coroner Kris Beals, County Treasurer Susan Meyer, County Clerk Marcella Cisna and Regional School Superintendent Bruce Hall. Also introduced were Republican County Board members and former county officials. State's Attorney Ray Cavanaugh served as the M/C for the program.

Ron Bigger and his cooking crew were recognized for their outstanding contribution each year at this event.

The Henderson County Republican Women's Club held their annual bake sale at the event and also contributed to the success of the Fish Fry with their assistance.
