JH Cheerleading Reinstated At Southern

by: Shirley Linder, Quill Editor

Last year Southern eliminated Junior High cheerleaders and opted for a Spirit Squad giving all the girls an opportunity to participate.

Feeling this did not work out well, Tina Waterman, volunteered to sponsor the cheerleaders, and asked the board to reinstate a core of 8-12 girls, with others serving on the Spirit Squad.

After much discussion regarding uniforms (which the school already has) and transportation, the board agreed there could be a cheerleading squad. The girls will be cheering at only the home games for the present. This is subject to change.

The only stipulation placed by the board was that the girls must choose between cheerleading and sports. They cannot do both since it causes a problem with transportation should they decide to cheer at away games.

Christy Fleece, high school cheerleading sponsor requested the board purchase new high school cheerleading uniforms to replace the 5 year old uniforms now being used.

The board voted to pay half for 12 new uniforms at an approximate cost of $1,065.40.

Doug Brooks reported on a meeting he and Jon Corzatt had attended in Dallas City. He said Dallas City and Nauvoo/Colusa had decided on a convergence. He went on to explain this means Dallas City will maintain K-8 grades with their own school board, Nauvoo-Colusa will have K-8 grades with their own school board, and 9-12 grades of both schools will be together with a school board of their own. The board directed Superintendent Barber to send a letter saying "no, but thanks for the offer."

Jon Corzatt reported on the Southern/Union consolidation meeting on August 14th which he attended along with Brendan Schaley as board members. It was an organizational meeting with Karen Jack and Doug Sams voted as co-chairmen, he said.

A public meeting scheduled by the Committee of Ten will be held on Tuesday, September 9, with a presentation given by Dr. Norm Durflinger. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and be held at the Union Elementary gym. The board hopes there will be a good attendance at this meeting.

Superintendent Barber stated the Union School Board had committed $3,000 toward the Committee of 10's work. "We need to discuss Southern's support," Barber said.

President Corzatt said they would discuss it later in the meeting, but it was not brought up again.

Superintendent Barber reported that the summer maintenance was finished and the janitors did a good job.

He also asked for permission to enter an agreement with Santanna Energy Services. Natural gas purchases with this firm could save about 13%, Barber reported. The board directed Barber to check with Nicor before a decision is made.

Permission was given by the board for a charter bus to be used for the football game scheduled for Chicago.

Principal Dale Buss reported:

Following closed session the board:

Present were: Board member, Melissa Livermore, Rod Fox, Jon Corzatt, Brad Arnold, Doug Brooks and Dan Bowman; Superintendent Charles Barber; Secretary Sharri Richard; Principals, Dale Buss and Jeff Nichols; Guests, Christy Fleece and Tina Waterman.

Board member Brendan Schaley was absent

The next board meeting has been changed from its regular scheduled date to Monday, September 29, 2003, at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the regular meeting the Budget Hearing for 2003-04 will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Unit Office.
