Jr. High Football at Union School
Dear Editor:
The Union Jr. High Football team has just finished their first (tough) season. Way to go! These young men had an opportunity to play seven games.
A lot of the teams had several more players than Union-but what a great effort! They learned several football fundamentals, positions, plays and other particulars.
There was marked improvement with each game.
They learned for sure that there is no I in TEAM, every position is important to the whole play, and how important teamwork is.
The practices were quite a workout-the boys became stronger (hopefully preventing some injuries).
I really would encourage any young man to give football a try. You are only young once. It's a great opportunity to be a part of a team and have fun!
The 8th graders will be a great asset to our high school program next year. I see a lot of potential with this awesome group of young men.
Just stick with it. You are all important to your team (and do it for yourself).
I'm also looking forward to next year's Jr High team. The 7th graders this year were absolutely terrific for their first year.
The roughest year is behind you. Next year will be better (scores don't say it all). I know you played your best. Lots of effort was seen on the field. We saw lots of good sportsmanship. That says a lot for this group. Way to get out there and give it your all. Enjoy your youth. It's a great way to enjoy your school years too!
You are off to a great start-just hang in there. It'll be worth it. You are all a very important part of the team. What a great first year!
I appreciate our communities, school and coaches for giving these boys a wonderful opportunity. You are all appreciated.

Idle Thoughts of An Idle Retiree
Dear Editor:
As you know, they have recently discovered hundreds of letters which Ronald Reagan wrote. Therefore, writing letters can't be all bad! This letter proceeds from some of the least important things to the most important things in our lives.
One thing that is hard to figure is why was Niklos, former W.I.U. tight end, waived by the Rams? He was very impressive at the August scrimmage at Hansen field.
Although he did pick up an injury, he was running first string fullback at that time.
They have used various tight ends, running backs, etc. at fullback this season, but none have been very effective lead blockers for Faulk and Gordon.
Another thing that is hard to figure is how easy it is to lose weight on the Atkins diet. As they say, you can eat all the meat, eggs, cheese, tossed salads, etc. you want but avoid carbohydrates (sugars and starches).
As Dr. Reem says, the key to any diet is limiting the total calorie intake. Even some of us couch potatoes have lost 30 pounds!
Many are now saying that our strong action in Iraq was a big mistake and we should be dealing with problems in our own country.
(Some, such as Gen. Clark, newest Democratic presidential candidate, have switched positions on this issue.)
Subsequently, the popularity of President Bush has taken a nose-dive. In my opinion, after the 9/11 attack, if our president hadn't taken gutsy action we would eventually have not had an economy or anything else to worry about!
How any civil society could idly stand by and let the most evil person in the world (Hussein) torture his own innocent people and not do anything about it is difficult to understand.
It is true we can't solve all the world's problems and it is very important to delegate this responsibility (for example, if North Korea wants to throw their weight around more, the peace seeking countries in that area should take care of it).
Back in the days when God was recognized as the ultimate source of power, there were much simpler problems. In my opinion, until we put him back as the top priority in our lives, we will continue to experience may difficult problems, which we humans cannot adequately resolve alone.
