The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
By Scott Dillard, Rebel Head Coach
Once again, the Rebs started out slow. Hosting the delayed Homecoming Game at home, Polo began their siege by taking an early lead on a 3-yard pass play. Their extra point kick was good making the score 7-0 with 1:18 left before halftime. After a costly turnover, Polo struck again with a 5-yard pass with 33 seconds left in the half. The score at the end of the half was Polo 14-Rebs 0.
The Rebs kicked off to start the second half. Polo used the clock well on the drive using 8 minutes. The Rebs defense held, forcing a punt. But the Rebs had another turnover. With 0:23 left in the third quarter, Polo scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak. The kick was good and the score was now 21-0.
In the 4th quarter, we had a 2 minute drive which ended with another turnover. At that point it seemed like the game was over.
The Rebels got the ball back with 9:58 to go and finally got on the board on a 1-yard run by Lenz. The conversion was good making the score 21-8.
With 6:00 left, we got the ball back and made a couple of nice runs on QB draws. Matt Kane found Matt McIntire who made a nice 13-yard run to score. The conversion try was no good and the score now stood at 21-14.
With 3:10 remaining in the game and one last chance, Bobby Caldwell kicked a perfect onside kick with Chase Heap recovering. At 1:43 Matt McIntire scored on a 5-yard run and the Rebs call their last time out. I asked the kids and staff, "What do you think - 1 or 2 point?" We went for the win and we got what we wanted - Brandon Rothzen was covered 1 on 1 but got open. But - we didn't connect this time.
The ending score of 21-20 was a tough one to swallow. The Rebs record now stands at 3-3 and know our backs are against the wall. We have to be 6-3 to make the playoffs. If we ever needed your great Rebel support, we need it now. We travel to Hammond, Indiana on October 11 to play a bigger school - St. Francis de Sales - with a 2:00 p.m. start.
The team and Southern football staff continue to appreciate the fans and all of your great support of our team.
