Firemen of the La Harpe Fire District went to the school with fire trucks and in full gear last Friday for a demonstration on fire safety in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week.
The local firemen annually come to the school to impress on students from grades Pre-K through 4th grade that fires are dangerous.
Firemen gave talks to students emphasizing "safety at home," "get out of the house," "have a meeting place for family members," and "have smoke detectors in your home." Students were also instructed to "Stop, Drop and Roll" if their clothing should ever get on fire.
In addition to the demonstrations, students were very excited to receive a turn holding the fire hose and spraying water across the school yard with the help of a firemen.
Firemen who helped with the demonstrations were Fire Chief Jerry Brown, Wes Carpenter, Doug Hobby, Chad Burt and Justin Livingston.
The school and the community continually express much appreciation for each one who serves on the fire department. The time, many hours of training and extra service they give for their community's protection does not go unnoticed. Young and old sleep more soundly at night and it is very calming to know if a need arises, these trained volunteers are only a call away.
