Dear Editor,
You have had two ladies that were born and raised in La Harpe pass away these past few months.
My mother was: Luceille Dennis Howe. Born August 14, 1909. Died July 23, 2003.
Her friend was: Vivian Hurdle Angle. Born March 16th, 1910. Died October 12, 2003.
The two ladies grew up together all through school and were best of friends along with Elizabeth Thompson who lived her whole life in La Harpe.
Vivian was my parents Matron of Honor on Sept. 4th 1929. She and Lloyd Angle lived many years in Rock Island. My father, Joseph W. Howe, was a professor of Engineering from 1929 to 1972 here at the University of Iowa. They saw each other many times through the years.
Believe it or not, the Angles oldest son, Ron and wife Sandra and my parents daughter (me) ended up living only about a block from each other in Minnetonka, MN.
Their oldest son, Scott, and our oldest son, Kevin, became very good friends all through school, and now, at age 42, we still keep in touch with each other although living far apart.
Our son is still in the Minneapolis area and Scott is in the Austin, TX area. Because of this happening, we all spent many happy times together with the three generations.
Vivian moved to Florida after Lloyd passed away and died in St. Petersburg, FL. My mother passed away here in Iowa City.
Recently I found pictures of the 65th Class Reunion and this prompted me to try to find you and let you know that two long-time citizens of your fair little town have passed away.

Dear Editor,
As the 7th annual America Recycles Day is again observed on November 15, many Illinois citizens will recognize the importance of this day...while others will not. Why is recycling important? Most everyone knows about the general benefits of recycling-conserving resources, creating jobs and economic benefits, reducing manufacturing emissions and more.
But here is the real story:
So what are the economic benefits? Recycling in Illinois:
While recycling has come a long way, each individual can always take steps to improve our environment. Here are a few simple ways to make a difference:
So now you know why to Rededicate Yourself to Recycling!

Dear Editor,
My precious wife of 40 years always believed that she would be the first to go and encouraged me to seek someone else at that time. As some have said, when you definitely feel the need for someone else, that is the best compliment you can give a former spouse.
There are a lot of lonely single people in the world. There are many who have lost a loving spouse, have been through a divorce or who have never found the right person.
After living alone for nine months, it is difficult to understand how people can live alone, without someone to kid around with or with whom to have an intelligent conversation. Some single people say they enjoy their freedom to do what they want. Why can't married people also do this?
For example, if women enjoy musical plays and shopping, go with a girlfriend and if guys enjoy sports, go with a guy friend.
It is important to let each spouse do their own thing of expertise, such as arranging social events or handling the bills and investments. However, it is essential to also have quality time together and solve major problems together.
Why do half of all marriages end in divorce? Because most young people who get married, are primarily looking for the physical attraction of a mate. They are looking for a Tom Cruise or a Britney Spears. Unfortunately, the most beautiful, handsome, intelligent, wealthy, etc. are often the ones with the largest egos, who tend to put themselves ahead of others, including their spouse. Their priorities are not properly arranged.
In my opinion, priorities should be: 1-God, your religion, and helping others, 2-your spouse, 3-other relatives, friends and loved ones, and 4-job and material things in life.
Two very important keys to a successful marriage are:
1- Similar Christian values
2-Each spouse caring more about the other than themselves.
Some necessary values are
1-Loyalty, 2- Honesty, and
3-Respect for others.
You need to consider what you have to offer and what you are looking for in a spouse.
I was looking for someone with similar interests or to compensate for some of my short comings.
This would involve a cool, confident woman who was not overly impressed with herself.
She would be a genuine Christian woman who has no serious bad habits, is in good health, is an intelligent conversationalist, and enjoys sports and the outdoors.
She would be reasonably good looking and also have inner beauty!
She would have a sense of humor (and be able to take kidding) and a good philosophy of life.
She would not spend beyond one's means and yet enjoy living.
She would have a need to love and be loved.
With God's help, I have found such a woman!
