La Harpe Residents are Thankful For City Park

by Judy Swanson,, The Quill Staff

La Harpe can think of many things it can be thankful for during this month of Thanksgiving. We have been blessed throughout the years with donations of various kinds from its citizens as well as outsiders. One of these blessings is our city park.

La Harpe City Park

The land it is on includes a whole city block and was donated to the town for public use by resident, Marvin Tyron, who originally platted the town of La Harpe in 1835. At that time, it was used as a free camp ground for settlers who were on their way west to make new homes for their families.

It was to be a place to rest for them, and allow them time to stock up on supplies. The land was not to be used for any other purpose but recreation or it would go back to the heirs.

In the 1870's, a well was dug on the north side of the park to accommodate the public, with the financial help of Andrew James.

Originally it had a two-story pagoda, but now a band stand/stage has replaced it. Throughout the years, a basketball court, playground equipment, and a shelter with picnic tables have been added.

Band concerts have been held there, as well as many picnics, Christmas drawings, turkey trot days and La Harpe Summerfest, with all the entertainment being held on the stage. In recent years, a war memorial was erected to honor veterans who have served our country both in war time and in peace. Memorial Day services are held there with many attending.

It is a beautiful park that is always well kept, and has many shade trees. Several of the trees had to be replaced a few years ago after storms damaged them. Residents should be very proud of our park and work to keep it a fun and safe place for all ages.
