In a small log building on the north side of the C.B.&Q. tracks and west of the Galva branch in the western part of Gladstone in 1856 Patrick Grady practiced the art of black smithing, the first of its kind in the hamlet of then known as Sagetown.
Lucius Cook was the first mail and station agent and Julius Gifford carried the mail to Oquawka.
A Mr. Golden, the first postmaster, absconded with all the money and disappeared.
G. Airs assumed the post for one and one half years followed by C. Lilteich who kept the post office in a candy jar for some time.
The mail was sent from Oquawka by Col. Patterson to him; he remained in the job for a few years.
