Twenty Southern athletes competed in the IESA Jr. High State Track Meet in E. Peoria on May 16 - 17. Southern had 4 members earning top 8 places and medals.
Layton Housman ran the 1600 meter run and finished 7th with a time of 5:15.43. He finished the 800 meter run 15th in 2:25.37.
Andy Chockley advanced through the preliminaries to the semi finals in the 110 meter hurdles with times of 17.39 and 16.95. The 8th grade boys 4x200 relay team of Sean Webb, Justin Manning, Cameron Hartman, and Andy Chockley finished with a time of 1:50.29.
The 8th grade girls 4x200 meter relay team of Hillary Brooks, Alicia Phillips, Ashley Coffey, and Robin Guile ran in 2:04.72. Fifth grader Samantha Arnold ran the 1600 meter run in 6:24.80 in the 8th grade division. Ashli Burg, also a 5th grader, ran in the 800 meter run and finished with a time of 2:49.24.
In the 7th grade section, Sarah Heller and Rachele Jack completed the 800 meter run in 2:42.58 and 2:46.10, respectively.
Miriam Rutzen finished the 400 meter dash in 1:05.7.
Miriam earned our highest place medal in the high jump. She cleared 4'8", with no misses, which gave her a 2nd place medal and finished just above the 2002 1st place winner.
The young 4x100 meter relay team of Mariah Brooks, Sarah Heller, Ashli Burg, and Jacinda Reighard ran in 1:00.75. The 4x200 meter relay consisted of Brittany Fox, Kristin Plath, Kayla Rothzen, and Miriam Rutzen.
They broke the school record they previously set with 2:01.98 and finished 10th overall. Brittany also competed in the shot put and put a distance of 23'4".
Our 100 meter hurdlers were Kayla Rothzen and Rachele Jack. Kayla earned a 3rd place medal with times of 17.77, 17.70 and 17.48. Rachele received a 5th place medal in very consistent times of 17.58, 17.55 and 17.55.
