Southern competed in the Jr. High Sectional Track Meet on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at Bushnell. After traveling to the meet in heavy rains, the bad weather held off long enough for us to perform.
The Southern track team performed very well, breaking 3 school records on the day and qualifying 20 athletes for the state competition.
Andy Chockley was the first to qualify in the 110m Hurdles, placing 3rd, but with a qualifying time of 17.40.
He was immediately followed by Rachele Jack and Kayla Rothzen placing 1st and 2nd, respectively in the 100m Hurdles. Rachele set a new school record at 17.30, and Kayla ran a 17.80.
For the 7th grade, Brittany Fox came in 4th place in the 100m dash in 14.1 seconds, Jacinda Reighard in 8th in 15.47, and Hillary Brooks finished 6th in 14.9 for 8th grade.
Kayla Rothzen ran the 7th grade 1600 in 6:18 for a 4th place finish. Jessica Zaiser and Samantha Arnold ran the same race in the 8th grade division. Jessica finished in 5th place in 6:45 and Samantha ran a quite impressive 6:15 which qualified her for state in 4th place. Miriam Rutzen ran a school record breaking and state qualifying 1st place 400m dash in 1:03.3.
Kristin Plath earned a 5th place in the 200m dash in 31.5 seconds. Sarah Heller and Rachele Jack both qualified for the 7th grade 800m run with 3rd place for Sarah in 2:44.8 and 4th place for Rachele in 2:46.7.
In the 8th grade, Ashli Burg ran a 2:46.9 for 2nd place and Jessica Zaiser held onto 6th place with 3:00.2.
The following 7th grade relays were also run:
4x100 - 4th with state qualifying time of 59.0 - Mariah Brooks, Sarah Heller, Ashli Burg, Jacinda
Reighard.
4x200 - 1st - qualifying and setting a new school record in 2:02.5 - Brittany Fox, Kristin Plath, Kayla Rothzen, Miriam
Rutzen.
4x400 - 3rd - Rachele Jack, Ashli Burg, Brittany Fox, Miriam Rutzen - 4:49.1
The 8th grade 4x200 relay of Hillary Brooks, Alicia Phillips, Ashley Coffey, Robin Guile qualified for state with a 3rd place time of 2:04.0. The 4x400 relay of Jessica Zaiser, Alicia Phillips, Mariah Brooks, Ashley Coffey ran in 5:03 for 4th place.
Brittany Fox won the 7th grade shot put with a put of 24; 1/4" and Hillary Brooks finished 3rd in 8th grade with 27'7 1/2". Hillary also threw the discus 67'6 1/2" for 4th place. Rachele Jack earned 7th place with 66'4". Miriam Rutzen won the 7th grade high jump by clearing 4'9" and Alicia Phillips will advance in the 8th grade high jump with a 4'6" 2nd place finish. Kayla Rothzen got 3rd in long jump with 12' 1/4" and Kristin Plath 8th with 12'6 1/2".
Josh Harkness will also advance to state competition with his 3rd place discus throw of 105'10". Josh earned 5th in shot put with 31'0"
While the girls were at field events the boys were running. The 7th grade 4x100 relay of Cody Postle, Mark Mynatt, Robert Day, Drue Waterman placed 5th with a time of 1:00.6. Layton Housman did an outstanding job in the 1600m run earning 1st place in 5:22.5 and also 1st in the 800m run. Justin Manning came in 7th place in the 200m dash with a time of 27.8 seconds. The 4x200m relay team of Sean Webb, Cameron Hartman, Justin Manning and Andy Chockley will also represent Southern at E. Peoria by finishing 2nd in 1:49.9.
The IESA state track meet will be held May 16-17 at EastSide Centre in East Peoria.
