The Southern Jr. High Boys Track team competed in the 3rd Annual Avon Jr. High Boys Track Invitational on April 24. In the 7th grade division, Josh Harkness finished 3rd in the shot put and hurled the discus to a 6th place finish. Layton Housman set a new meet record in the 800m run with a time of 2:36. He then duplicated this performance by again setting a meet record time in the 1600m run in 5:42. Andy Chockley came in 2nd in the 110m hurdles and tied for 6th place in the high jump. The 8th grade 4x200m relay team of Andy Chockley, Justin Manning, Cameron Hartman, and Layton Housman earned 3rd.
The Southern Jr. High Girls Track Team traveled to Avon for the 3rd Annual Avon Jr. High Girls Track Invitational on Monday, April 28. The following teams were also present: Alexis, Avon, Bushnell-PC, Dallas City, La Harpe, Monmouth ICS, Northwestern, Roseville, Union and Yorkwood. Although stormy weather covered the surrounding area, the Avon track stayed dry. The 7th grade team returned with a 2nd Place plaque and turned in some impressive performances. Kayla Rothzen set a new meet record in the 10 meter hurdles with a time of 18.12. Previously this season, she set a new school record with a time of 18.0. Rachele Jack finished close in 3rd place. Kayla came in 4th in the 1600m run. Miriam Rutzen also set a new meet record and tied the school record in the 400m dash with a time of 1:06.5. Rachele Jack came in 6th. Kristin Plath place 6th in the 200m dash and Sarah Heller ran well in the 800m run finishing 2nd. The 4x200m relay team consisting of Brittany Fox, Kristin Plath, Kayla Rothzen, and Miriam Rutzen ran to a 1st place finish. The 4x400m relay team including Rachele Jack, Sarah Heller, Ashli Burg, and Brittany Fox crossed in 2nd place. Miriam Rutzen had a 2nd place finish in the high jump; she previously tied the school record by clearing the height of 4'9". Brittany Fox put the shot for a 3rd place finish and Rachele Jack earned 6th place in the discus. These are both new field events for Rachele and Brittany in the past few meets.
In the 8th grade division, Ashli Burg came in 4th in the 800m run. The 4x200m relay team involving Hillary Brooks, Alicia Phillips, Ashley Coffey, and Robin Guile finished a respectable 4th. Jessica Zaiser, Alicia Phillips, Samantha Arnold, and Ashley Coffey earned 6th place in the 4x400m relay. Alicia Phillips leaped to a 3rd place finish in high jump and Hillary Brooks completed the shot put competition in 5th place.
