The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment in History

The South Henderson congregation first gathered in Wm. Jamison's log barn. Here all the sacraments were celebrated and families worshiped.

The first actual church building was erected in 1837on the lot of the church a few feet to the north of the present church. This was a frame building about forty feet square and eventually found to be too small for the group.

In the summer of 1854 a new church was begun; the stone walls were erected and the building enclosed. On July 4, 1855 the stone church building, 50 x 80 feet, was dedicated. It had cost about $4,000.

Today, as you wander the back roads of Henderson County, pause to examine this lovely old structure, a testament to the devotion of those early pioneers.
