Ag & FFA Will Remain At Southern

by: Shirley Linder-Quill Editor

Jerry Keimig, spokesman for the Ag Alumni Committee, told Southern board members they were willing to pledge $10,000 toward supporting the Ag program for the year 2003-04.

The money would be raised by fund raisers, and they feel they will receive good support.

Keimig stated they would also, if possible, like to have some input on the selection of a teacher, as well as the classes.

He also said a liaison between the board and the Ag Alumni would be very helpful.

Hiring an Ag teacher with a bachelor degree will run approximately $14,300, and one with a masters degree would be $14,800.

Profits from the school farm have been going into the Building & Maintenance Fund, and

Superintendent Barber was asked to look into the possibility of having the profits put into the Ag program.

At 7:25 p.m the board went into closed session, returning to open session at 7:50 p.m.

At that time a motion was made by Rod Fox, seconded by Brad Arnold that they reinstate the Ag program to half time along with FFA, accepting the $10,000 pledge from the Ag Alumni. The district's portion is not to exceed $5,000 for the teacher's salary. Motion passed unanimously.

Mr. Keimig was informed that the Board would need to know their intentions on funding the Ag program the following school season by March of 2004.

In other business, Principal Dale Buss reported that Southern has been invited to join the West Central Conference for all sports. They have also been invited to join the Lincoln Trail Conference in football only. Neither conference would include Fine Arts. No decision was made.
