J.S. Mitchell journey from Pennsylvania to Henderson County in 1839.
First, he stopped at Warsaw and recovered and later moved to around Terre Haute.
By 1848 he was in the political arena of the county and served as county recorder.
In 1849 he settled on Sec.16 of South Henderson Township where stood one of the best log cabins to be found in the county at that time.
It had a shingle roof and a stone and brick chimney while those of his neighbors were constructed of mud, straw, and sticks.
