In 1882 the village of Gladstone had the following businesses: J.C.Tolman-grocery and drug store; Thorton Hedge-grocery store; J. W. Pence-dry good store; M.Cunningham-Star Hotel; Mrs. Marsden-Commercial House, a hotel; two saloons kept by Geo. Sottle and John Lilteich; one barber, William Hulet; two blacksmiths, J.S. McFarland Hulet; one meat market-Wm. Wooden and Misler; one doctor-Dr. Bulsford; one feed mill ran by D.C.Ward; one carpenter shop-John James; and a manufactory and refinery of grape sugar, glucose and sorghum syrups.
Quite a bustling place, the village had a population containing a large foreign element, most of which were Swedes, some Irish and Germans.
