La Harpe Summer Music Camp

The Sanctuary at Abundant Life Church last Friday night was aglow with happy campers and astonished parents. Thirty-four children spent the week at the La Harpe Summer Music Camp hosted by Abundant Life Church and directed by Andrea Ferguson. The kids spent their mornings in music classes learning the camp musical and in craft classes where they made props for the musical, which included paper mache rocks for the musical's outdoor set and decorated visors to wear during the performance. The campers also had fun in recreation and snack time. The camp culminated in a performance of the camp musical "It Happened at Camp Willomocky" Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.

There were nearly 150 people there to support the campers. The kids sang 7 different songs and had choreography to most of the songs. Soloists included: Ashley Lotz, Stephanie Wetterling, Alexis Carle, and Nikki Cecil.

"The musical was about kids going to camp so it fit into the theme of the music camp perfectly," said camp director Andrea Ferguson. Willomocky stands for W-for worship, I- I'm gonna celebrate, L- learning about the Lord, L- laughter, O- oh my it is great to live, MO- more of good things God gives, CK- come on kids smile, Y- Yahoo, let's stay awhile.

The leads in the musical were auditioned from the junior high youth group at Abundant Life and have been working on their parts for 8 weeks. All the practice is worth it because the end result was a tremendous performance that everyone was proud of. Campers came from all around the area and we even had one camper from Michigan and one from Arizona. Abundant Life Church plans to make this an annual event. The camp was open to children grades 1st through 5th grade.
