The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
A small but enthusiastic group of youngsters met Saturday afternoon, June 21, 2003, at the Henderson County Public Library to enjoy an afternoon of games, stories, and learning more about some of the "Community Stars" who use their time to make our community a great place to live.
Several service vehicles from the area were available to inspect with the Biggsville Fire Chief Jon Curtiss bringing the Fire Engine, Biggsville EMT Marilyn Evans bringing the Ambulance, County Sheriff Mark Lumbeck and Deputy Steve Haynes bringing County Police Cars, and State Trooper Brendan Schaley with the State Police Car.
Youngsters had an opportunity to inspect the vehicles, talk to personnel, and have their picture taken with these Community Stars.
After playing games, reading stories, and practicing some of the exercise used for physical therapy, as instructed by Physical Therapist Sherri Vancil, a number of area workers-paid and volunteer - were interviewed by Terry Avery. He is a retired Union School District teacher and area farmer.
Children and adults present had an opportunity to learn more about some of the people who serve our area including Dr. S. C. Lindo, Biggsville Physician; Arthur Kane, Raritan Banker and Library Board and County Historical Society Member;
Mark Lumbeck, County Sheriff; Jon Curtiss, Biggsville Fire Chief; Ray Shafer, Biggsville Contractor and Boy Scout Leader; Ray Cavanaugh, Henderson County State's Attorney;
Rick Steiner, Biggsville Banker and Boy Scout Leader; Charlotte Ackermann, Union Kindergarten Teacher and Girl Scout Leader; Brendan Schaley, Illinois State Trooper;
Curt Eisenmayer, Stronghurst Fire Chief, Retired County Farm Advisor and KBUR Farm Director; Marilyn Evans, Biggsville EMT; and Sherri Vancil, GRMC Physical Therapist.
We discovered that most of the citizens of Henderson County serve in many ways both paid and volunteer to do a lot to contribute to the improvement of the county in which we live.
Cookies and Kool-Aid finished off an afternoon of fun and learning.
It was thoroughly enjoyed by those in attendance.
We look forward to seeing everyone again July 26 for the Summer Reading Wrap-Up Party. Watch for more information.
