The 11th annual Stronghurst Parade and Taste of Stronghurst was another fun Christmas event for the community as the weather was warmer and calm and cooperated perfectly.
Maybe it had something to do with the fact the Grand Marshall this year was the news team from Good Morning Quad Cities of TV-8 with Paula Perez news leader, and metrologist James Zahara.
You're right, that's probably not the reason. It is more likely to be the theme of the parade "Angels Among Us," which drew many angels into the community for the day.
One entry in the parade was a bit surprising, however, and must have slipped in unawares to the organizers. A gang from "Hell's Angels" on three motor cycles seemed to have gotten into the parade, but was reported to be having a grand old time and not causing any serious problems. However, the gang was seen at the local office of Dr. Pogue's so maybe there was some ruckus later.
One of the special floats was sponsored by Doran Insurance. It is pictured above with representatives of a Soldier-Mike Link, Sheriff - Mark Lumbeck, Nurse- Judy Avery, Firemen-Matt Link, Pastor- George Knox, and Teacher-Lynn Ragar.
A tribute was read, prepared by Paula Bigger as they passed by.
"They come from each and every walk of life, one is a son or a daughter, or a husband or a wife. They give of their time and their energy in times of strife. They give their spirit, their faith, and some even their life. They look like ordinary people, nothing special about them at all, but when we need them the most, they come running, standing tall. Their halos are often pushed aside and their wings hidden by the uniform they wear. But they surely must have halos and wings because they do things we wouldn't dare. They are the many unsung heroes in our lives everyday, whose jobs are often difficult, and usually low is the pay. Yet, they continue to serve us without any qualm. They are the angels among us, may God hold them in His palm."
