At State Compete for 3rd Place On Thursday
The goal of the Southern Seventh Grade Girls' Basketball team has been achieved. That goal is to play for one of four pieces of hardware: first, second, third, or fourth.
The road to state began on the first day of practice. Each game played brought them closer to their intended goal.
On November 26th, they successfully hurdled their first obstacle, the Regional Championship by defeating Roseville 43 to 23.
Miriam Rutzen was the high scorer that evening with 23 points. This gave them plenty to be thankful for on Thanksgiving.
On to the next hurdle. December 3rd found them playing Abingdon in the Sectional Championship game. Both teams fought hard to the bitter end with the Raiders becoming victorious. The final score was 25 to 22 with Julianna Gillam as high scorer for the evening with 11 points.
Saturday, December 6th found the team at Divernon for the first round of the IESA state tournament. In the 10:30 a.m. game, they played and defeated Bartonville Monroe 33 to 23. Ashley Coffey scored 19 points to become the high scorer.
This victory launched them into the Elite 8. Monday, December 8th, the Raiders played Greenfield in the second round of the tournament.
Greenfield played a tough game, but the Raiders proved their skill and determination by defeating them 28 to 22. Both Miriam Rutzen and Raven Wood scored well with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The road to the Final Four was now in its last mile. Tuesday evening found the Raiders playing Paris Crestwood to determine which trophy they would play for on Thursday,
Paris Crestwood came out victorious with a win over the Southern Raiders.
