Membership into Southern's chapter is determined by four criteria: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Each of these criteria is voted on by the high school faculty at a teacher's meeting. To be nominated, a student must be at least a sophomore and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 or above. The ballots include a list of each nominees' activities while in high school. These are used for the basis of the leadership and service categories. The ballot also includes a character category, in which the nominee is judged on his attitude, self confidence, and reputation. All ballots are tabulated by the sponsor and a faculty member.
Being elected into this national organization is one the highest honors that can come to a high school student. Each member must obey all of the rules of the National Honor Society and must not do anything that would disgrace the society.

Following the initiation ceremony, a short reception was held for the new initiates, their parents, and faculty. Mrs. Janet Shinkle is Southern's National Honor Society Sponsor.
Not included are Nick Burg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Brent Burg and Erika Ensminger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Todd Ensminger. These two students were elected to Southern's Chapter of National Honor Society but could not attend. They will be initiated at a private ceremony when they return.
