Moment in History

In years past longevity was an oddity and anyone reaching their nineties were thought to be remarkable.

In the 1882 History of Henderson County special note is made of Mr. And Mrs. Amasa Allen and their family.

The couple had been married for 76 years. Mr. Allen was 95 years of age and Mrs. Allen was 91.

Their children living at that time were Martin,70 yrs.; Hannah, 67 yrs.; Mary, 64 yrs.; Joseph, 61 yrs.; A.F., 57 yrs. and A.T., 52 yrs.

Amasa Allen is characterized as being a sprightly old gentleman.

Today, we know of individuals in the hundreds and ninety sounds young.
