To begin preparation for a Southern/Union consolidation petition to be placed on the ballot November 2, 2004 a meeting was held on August 14th at Southern, with Karen Jack presiding.
The Discovery Committees of Southern and Union met to disassemble the Discovery Committees and form a Committee of Ten.
The Committee of Ten will consist of Karen Jack, Robert Scott, John Lafary, Bill Steck, Bryan Heap. Doug Sams, Liz Sanning, Mark Torrance, Lonnie Brent and Steve Lumbeck.
Officers elected were Co-Chair, Karen Jack and Doug Sams and Liz Sanning as Secretary.
Each school board will be asked by the committee to finance hiring an attorney.
Sub Committees were also formed with one Southern and one Union member as co-chairs.
Curriculum-Bryan Heap and Liz Sanning
Transportation and Extra Curricular -John Lafary and Steve Lumbeck
Building Facilities-Mark Torrance and Bill Steck
Marketing/Public Relations-Robert Scott and Lonnie Brent
Finance and Legal-Karen Jack and Doug Sams
These committees will be looking into, new district board members selection (at large vs board districts); block vs traditional class scheduling; building capacities, Jr. High location and staff seniority to name a few.
It was agreed a teacher and one board member should be included in the committee meetings. The committee will be scheduling public meetings, small grassroots meetings and staff meetings in the future.
There is much work to be done by the sub committees and it was agreed the Committee of Ten would meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month.
The next meeting will be held at Union on September 9, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. with Co-Chair Doug Sams presiding.
