Southern Board Holds Special Meeting

by: Shirley Linder - Quill Editor

In a special meeting held Monday, August 11th, Southern School Board members continued their discussion on consolidation.

A consolidation petition will need to be filed in the Regional Superintendent's Office no later than Monday, April 26, 2004 in order for it to be on the ballot for the November 2, 2004 election .

Karen Jack, representing the Discovery Committee, asked each board member to give her two names for a grass roots committee on consolidation. President Jon Corzatt said he would rather not discuss names during the open meeting and they would "kick around some names" in closed session.

The Discovery Committee members will serve on The Committee of Ten which will be formed to work on consolidation between the Southern and Union School Districts.

Southern has also been invited to attend a meeting with Dallas City and other neighboring schools. Jon Corzatt and Doug Brooks volunteered to attend the meeting on Wednesday evening (Aug. 13).

The Southern and Union Discovery Committees will be meeting on Thursday (August 14).

The board voted to "terminate with regret, all proceedings of the school farm grant work associated with NRCS which had to do with building a pond & wetlands for students to study on the school farm.

The grant stipulated that they must build all or none of the project which would also require additional funds from the district. The board would also be giving up some income farm ground for the project. The board indicated they didn't think the benefit to the students and to the district would outweigh their costs.

The board entered closed session at 7:40 p.m.

Following closed session the board:

Present: Board members Brad Arnold, Brendan Schaley, Rod Fox, Melissa Livermore, Jon Corzatt and Doug Brooks; Superintendent Charles Barber; Secretary Sharri Richard; Principal Jeff Nichols and Karen Jack. Absent was board member Dan Bowman.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 25, 2003 at 7:00 p.m.
