Southern school board met Monday, July 28th and had many good discussions as they prepare to start another year. Doug Brooks served as president in the absence of Jon Corzatt.
Students will be required to pay a $25 activity fee this year for participation in football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, softball, cheerleading, pom pon, drama club, musical, music contest, scholastic bowl, track and FFA in High School.
In Junior High the fee covers basketball, track, baseball, volleyball, speech and scholastic bowl. The $25 fee allows students to participate in all of the activities and is not required for each individual activity.
It was voted to raise the price of admission for sports events this year. Individual admission will be $2.50 at Jr. High, $3.50 at High School, and $1 for students.
Season passes will be available for $25 for Jr. High; $50 for High School and $70 for a district pass which is good at both sites. The Bank of Stronghurst has purchased 100 student tickets.
In preparation for bringing the school's bleachers up to code the Building Trades Class will add floor and seat blocking and side and back fencing to the visitor's football bleachers this year.
They will also add back fencing to the home football bleachers. Work is scheduled to be done over the next several years to bring the bleachers, both inside and out, up to code.
The Southern Athletic Booster Club held a golf tournament at Hend-Co Hills and did very well, clearing over $4,000.
The board expressed their sincere appreciation for the group's effort. They will be holding a Duck Soup Co-Ed softball tourney again this year at Lomax on Saturday, September 6th.
Karen Jack and John Lafary, on behalf of the consolidation discovery committee, led a discussion with board members on the recent feasibility plan that was submitted. The discovery committee consists of Karen Jack, Bob Scott, John Lafary, Bill Steck and Bryan Heap.
Karen said the consultants did a good job with the study and the committee recommends consolidation with Union. A Committee of 10, five from Southern and five from Union now needs to be formed.
