The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment in History

Early schools were quite different than those of today.

The school master's word was law and none dared to disobey.

Each family brought what books they had and the students learned from them, be it the old English Reader, American Preceptor, the Story of George Washington, Francis Marion or Christopher Columbus.

A quill pen was used and much of the teacher's time was spent in making and mending these pens.

Schools were supported by subscription; otherwise, each family paid so much per student for a term of school.

Teachers received from $11 to $13 per month.
