Following the Olena Tragedy a vigilante group was formed to protect those upright citizens that had helped Mr. Brook foil the robbers.
All had feared reprisal and by banding together presented a power against lawlessness of the times when horse thieves were numerous and an organized band more or less controlled the river bottom.
First they met in houses of the neighborhood, but found that all their intentions were well known in the area so shifted their meetings to the Brook's schoolhouse.
Mr. I.J.Brook was elected president with Mr. W. McChesney serving as secretary. A constitution and by-laws were executed and group brought criminal activity to the attention of the law.
Just the general knowledge that the group existed tended to deter crime.
