Moment in History

Hard to believe that Sagetown (Gladstone) was once the site of a brewery, but at one time a Mr. McFarland had a large building which housed the apparatus to make beer and high wines.

Tragedy struck one Monday morning when the fire broke out in the yeast room.

A stove was keep burning within the room and had been tended on Saturday evening as usual; it was replenished again on Sunday evening too.

Monday morning about 1 o'clock the fire was discovered in the roof over the yeast-room and soon all was consumed by flames.

The beer was gone and over 60 barrels of fine high wines as well as the building and its contents were totally destroyed.

Some were of the opinion that the fire had been set, but no proof of this theory was ever found.
