Theresa Brokaw, Freshman, Fifth In State!

Theresa Brokaw of Southern High School placed fifth in the Class A State Cross Country Final Saturday.

There were 208 runners on the Detweiller Park course on a sunny, but windy morning.

"Theresa ran the race in 18:01, a very respectable time on a windy day," her father said, her coach and also an avid runner.

Thersea's time of 18:09 was just two seconds behind fourth-place finisher Andrea Edgar of Quincy Notre Dame.

She had set her goal to finish in the top five, but said she ran as if it were just another race, rather than the state championship.

Having ran the race here before, her father said, she came better prepared and with more confidence.

She kept her eye on the top three, trying to pull up on them, she explained.

Theresa improved her best at Detweiller Park by five seconds.

Sarah Selby of Shelbyville repeated as State Champ with 17:16 time in the senior dominated top six.

Stephanie Simms of Gardner was runner-up (17:28), and Pam Wolf of Roseville third posting a time of 17:35 to lead Monmouth to a fifth-place team finish.

Theresa held off Rebekah Faber of Princeton, last years runner-up, in the last mile to get her fifth place medal.

Theresa was very happy to hear of the Rebel's football team's victory later in the afternoon at the 3:00 award program in downtown Peoria.

Theresa Brokaw is interviewed by the news media along with her father and Coach Pat Brokaw after her fifth place win for SHS in the state Cross Country Final in Peoria.
