American Legion Post #765 Reports Building Progress

Jack Kinslow, Finance Officer of the American Legion Post #765 in Stronghurst has reported the progress in remodeling their building at 120 S. Broadway.

As of October 17, 2002, the donations have totaled approximately $30,427.00 which includes cash and material.

Of this total, $4,031.00 has been received from members (48) in cash donations and material. The large number of volunteer hours of labor is immeasurable in terms of dollars and cents.

Local businesses (37) have donated $19,091.00 in both cash and materials. Included in that total is a donation of $10,000 from the Twomey Foundation early in the fund-raising campaign.

Individuals (72) have contributed both cash and materials for a total of $6,470.00 and local organizations (6) have contributed $835.00 alone.

(Note: The numbers in parentheses are the total number of contributors in each category).

A total of $25,954.00 has been spent to date, leaving a balance of $5,000.00 in the building project savings account.

Still needed to complete the project are the following items and the cost of each:

1. Furnace and air conditioning - $4,000.00 (installed)

2. Flooring in main hall - $3,000

3. Wainscoating for main hall - $1,000.00 (material only - using volunteer labor)

4. Counters for kitchen - $2,000.00

5. Miscellaneous costs - $1,500.00 (labor and material)

The total needed is $11,500.00. Using their $5,000.00 in savings, they still need approximately $6,500.00 to meet the costs for the new building.

In addition to Legion activities, the building, which eliminates the steps to the old meeting area, may be rented for community functions such as open houses, meetings etc. The Scouts will continue to use the meeting room upstairs above the Post Office. The Post Office building is still owned by the Legion.
