Scholastic Leaders of La Harpe High School Class of 2002

La Harpe High School has announced that Shannen Susann Painter is the class of 2002 valedictorian and Rebecca McKoon, Emily Noel Eddington and Kyle Johnson will be the class salutatorians. The selected leaders will be honored at the graduation ceremony on Sunday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m.

Valedictorian

Shannen Painter is the daughter of Stephen and Diane Painter. She is the granddaughter of Roy Painter and Jerald and Clara Jean Boyd.

Shannen will graduate with a GPA of 4.1774 on a 4.00 scale. During her high school career Shannen has been very active in music, participating in chorus for four years, swing choir for two years, and jazz band for two years. She has served as the chorus accompanist for four years and has won several awards at Solo and Ensemble Contest. Shannen was selected to participate in the Bradley Honor Choir her sophomore year, she was a JV football cheerleader her freshman year. She has been active in National Honor Society all four years the WYSE team for three years, earning a 3rd place award in chemistry her senior year. She has served as a first and second grade computer lab helper for two years, and a teacher assistant for one year. Shannen has been a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students and the Society for Academic Achievement for four years.

Shannen was the Sweetheart Dance attendant her freshman and sophomore years and was selected to be a graduation marshal her junior year and was this year's Homecoming Queen. Shannen was selected as a youth to Springfield Tour Delegate for McDonough Telephone Company, and was the Youth to Washington Tour Winner.

And was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" by her classmates. Shannen is an active member of the Terre Haute United Methodist Church. She has served as the church pianist for 3 years, and the Sunday School pianist for 4 years. She is a substitute Sunday School teacher and also a Bible School helper.

Shannen has been named an Illinois State Scholar and has received several scholarships including the Merit Recognition Scholarship, the First State Bank of Western Illinois scholarship, The C. Dannen Latherow Scholarship, the Illinois AMVETS Scholarship, and the Western Illinois University Presidential Scholarship.

Shannen will be attending Western Illinois University, majoring in elementary education and will pursue a master's degree in either elementary education or guidance counseling.

Salutatorian

Emily Noel Eddington is the daughter of Jackie and Gary Eddington and the granddaughter of Jack and MaryBelle Sharp and the late Lloyd and Pearl Eddington.

During her high school career Emily was involved in band her freshman and sophomore years and chorus her senior year. Emily was a cheerleader for Thunder football and Eagle basketball for all 4 years and was named Universal Cheerleaders Association All Star her junior and senior year, performing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York her junior year, and was given a UCA Staff application her senior year at camp.

Emily choreographed the routines and cheers seen at football games, basketball games this past year. She has participated in art all four year, earning several Bi-County Art Show 1st place awards. Emily served as secretary of senior class, and was the editor of the 2002 yearbook. Emily has been involved in the National Honor Society for 4 years, serving as a freshman associate her first year.

She was in Spanish Honor Society and served as a library assistant for 2 year. Emily was voted as Most Artistic by her class and chosen as a graduation marshal her junior year. Emily is a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students and the Society for Academic Achievement for 4 years. Emily was selected 1st attendant of the Homecoming Court, and was the Sweetheart Dance Queen.

Emily has received several scholarships including: the B. I. and Flora Mueller Scholarship, the C. Dannen Latherow Memorial Scholarship, the La Harpe Community Book Scholarship, the Monmouth College Helen Brown Memorial Scholarship and the National Honor Society Book Scholarship.

After graduation Emily plans to attend Monmouth College with a major in communications and will be a member of the Monmouth Scotts Cheerleading squad.

Salutatorian

Rebecca McKoon is the daughter of Janet and Jim McKoon, and the granddaughter of Mary and the late Ed McKoon and C. W. and the late Georgia Morrison.

Rebecca will graduate with a GPA of 4.0611 on a 4.00 scale. During her high school career Rebecca has been involved in band for four years and chorus for one year.

She was in cheerleading for three years, Scholastic Bowl all four years, serving as Captain her senior year. She was a member of the National Honor Society for four years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer her senior year.

Rebecca was member of the Spanish Honor Society for one year, the yearbook staff one year, a library assistant for one year, and on the WYSE team two years.

She is a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students, the Society for Academic Achievement and was voted Most Changed Since Elementary School by her classmates.

Rebecca has received the C. Dannen Latherow Memorial Scholarship, and the Merit Recognition Scholarship. After high school, Rebecca plans to attend a four year university.

Salutatorian

Kyle Johnson is the son of Debbie and Rick Johnson. He is the grandson of Eugene and Betty Johnson and June Schoof and the late George Schoof. Kyle will graduate with a GPA of 3.977 on a scale of 4.00.

Kyle has been an active member of the La Harpe FFA chapter throughout high school. He received the Star Greenhand Award his freshman year and was elected Jr. President his sophomore year. He served as treasurer his junior year and was elected FFA chapter President his senior year. Kyle participated in football for four years, the National Honor Society for four years. Kyle is a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students and the Society for Academic Achievement.

He was a member of In Friends We Trust (peer helpers) his freshman and sophomore years. He was selected to be a Graduation Marshal his junior year and received the DAR Good Citizenship award his senior year. He was selected by his senior class as having the best Best Personality.

Kyle has received several scholarships including: The Ted Irish Memorial Scholarship. The C. Dannen Latherow Scholarship, The La Harpe FFA/Dannen Latherow Scholarship, The Hancock County Beef Association Scholarship, the Hancock County Farm Bureau Scholarship, the Hancock County Farm Credit Services Scholarship, The National FFA/International Truck & Engine Corp. Scholarship, and the Leon and Marion Lamet Scholarship.

Kyle plans to attend Western Illinois University in the fall with a major in Ag Business.
